Low is a large henge monument with megaliths, laying prone, arranged
around the inner bank. It is not known for certain whether they ever
stood, although Aubrey Burl, the main authority on Stone Circles,
thinks that they did.
I am inclined to agree, given the length and shape of the stones
themselves, and that there is no precedent for a stone circle lain
entirely flat, that I am aware of. The henge is a great site to visit,
given its ease of access, and is by far the largest circle in this part
of the world. Always windy, and usually busy during the summer months,
the views are spectacular, and it is easy to see why this location was
chosen.
Visible from the top of the bank, towards the west is Gib Hill, the remains of a prehistoric burial mound.
