England
England
is the geographically largest country in the UK, and its landscape
& peoples are historically diverse. This has been due to its
proximity to continental Europe, and lack of natural barriers, which
have led to constant invasion, immigration and raiding from prehistory
to '1066' and beyond. This can be seen in an extremely diverse range of
megalithic structures, from tiny, knee-high stone circles, to the
towering monuments of Stonehenge and Avebury.
There is no real feature
unique to
English sites, with the exception of Stonehenge, but Megalithic
engineering reached its peak with the largest man made structures ever
observed in the prehistory of Britain: Avebury Henge & Stone
Circle, and Silbury Hill - a man made mound so large, even the Romans
had to go around it!
